“No more nuclear waste” say Nuclear Free Councils
Nuclear Free Local Authorities cautiously welcomed today's publication by Government and the Devolved Administrations of a consultation paper on implementation of radioactive waste management policy.
However, NFLAs warned that government plans for new nuclear stations could generate 50% more waste for future management. And that this could put 'legacy' waste management programme at risk.
Speaking for NFLAs, their Chair, Fife Councillor Mike Rumney said:
“It is clear that the Government's plan for new nuclear stations is driving the timetable for radioactive waste management. Wastes produced by a new nuclear programme could sink current efforts to deal with the legacy. This would be disasterous.
The key to progress is public confidence and that will be lost if Government drives the waste management programme too hard just to try and demonstrate the problem is 'solved', and that we have a solution for wastes from new nuclear stations.
Right now nothing is solved - but we have got a programme that we can all work on.”
